UN Secretary-General pledges to promote ‘common response’ to central Asia’s diverse challenges

Ban Ki-moon is visiting Central Asia ‘to support and promote a common response to the many cross-border challenges the region faces, including environmental issues, water and energy, drug trafficking and trans-boundary crime’. He will visit five countries (Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan), and will emphasise the importance of cooperation and will also touch on key UN priorities, such as ensuring sustainable development and tackling climate change during his visit. Germany limits joint intelligence operations with United States

Germany has decided to limit its cooperation in joint intelligence efforts with the United States. The decision comes in the wake of revelations of US spying on European partners and signals a breach in the long-standing information sharing partnership between the two nations. For the United States, the restriction follows a series of ‘blows’ to its intelligence apparatus which have included reconsideration of its drone programme, a renewal of the Patriot Act, and a recent ruling by the Appeals Court that its practice of surveillance data collection was illegal. Global actors convene in Sendai for United Nations Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction: international cooperation vital for development and climate change agenda

A number of national and international actors are currently gathered in the Japanese city of Sendai for the United Nations Third World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction. The Conference assesses ten years of global cooperation to curb the impact of disasters, and aims to update and create an effective global prevention framework that utilises a variety of sectors. India and Seychelles sign four agreements to foster shared responsibility for maritime security in the region

India and the Indian Ocean island of Seychelles strengthened their ties as the two states signed four agreements. The four pacts relate to cooperation in various areas including hydrography, renewable energy, infrastructure development, sale of navigation charts and electronic navigational charts, and boosting maritime security. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the strong security partnership between the countries had enabled them to fulfill their ‘shared responsibility to advance maritime security in the region’.
