Possible Suspension of Syria’s membership in the Arab League

The regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad on Sunday called for an emergency meeting of the Arab League after the 22-member organization voted to suspend the country’s membership by Wednesday if it does not comply with a peace plan to end the violence against anti-government demonstrators that has killed more than 3,500 since spring. Turkish, Qatari, Saudi and French diplomatic outposts were attacked after the vote Saturday, only the second of its kind in the history of the regional Arab League, with some members threatening to push for economic and political sanctions.

UN Secretary-General warns that poorest countries cannot bear the costs of climate change alone

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday urged governments in rich nations to work around troubled economic times and scale up donations to a global climate change fund that is at risk of becoming an “empty shell”.

ICJ elects four judges

The United Nations General Assembly and Security Council re- elected Judges Hisashi Owada (Japan), Peter Tomka (Slovakia) and Xue Hanqin (China) as Members of the International Court of Justice. Mr. Giorgio Gaja (Italy) was elected as a new Member of the Court.

Germany pays foreign officials to help with deportations of asylum seekers without identity documents

Germany paid officials of other States such as Sierra Leone to issue identity documents for asylum seekers that arrive in Germany without any indication of their countries of origin. The lack of identity documents is a very frequent phenomenon among persons that flee from places of persecution.

Vacancy for a Postdoctoral Researcher in the SHARES Project

The SHARES project is looking for a new postdoctoral researcher to join the team. The postdoctoral researcher will carry out independent research into the substantive and/or procedural aspects of shared responsibility in international law. Candidates should apply with an outline of a research project that they propose to conduct as part of the SHARES project (max. 1500 words).
