UN Mission chief applauds joint FARDC-MONUSCO operations against armed groups in eastern DRC

A joint operation by UN troops and the Congolese army (FARDC) took control of the main bases used by an armed group actively threatening security and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s long-troubled eastern region. FARDC troops backed by attack helicopters and the Force Intervention Brigade of the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) took control of bases used by the National Liberation Front, known by the French acronym FNL, in an area of restive South Kivu Province. Former head of UN Ebola mission: UN has ‘heavy responsibility’

UNSC resolution stresses importance of strengthening trans-regional and international cooperation on a basis of ‘a common and shared responsibility to counter the world drug problem and related criminal activities’

Amid a proliferation of well-funded and well-organised transnational criminal activities in Africa, the Middle East and beyond, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution spotlighting its concern over the ties between cross-border crime and terrorism and called on UN member states to ramp up efforts in combatting the two activities. European countries must acknowledge their role in CIA rendition programme

Professor Manfred Novak, United Nations special rapporteur on torture between 2004 and 2010, has stated that the United Kingdom must undertake independent investigations into allegations of its involvement in the CIA’s torture programme. Contrary to the assurances given by both the Labour and coalition government, Novak gathered evidence suggesting that the United States utilised the British overseas territory of Diego Garcia for detaining individuals. The Crown Prosecution Service confirmed that they had “received a file of evidence from the Metropolitan police investigating two specific cases of alleged rendition of named individuals to Libya and their alleged ill-treatment” with the apparent assistance of MI6. The CPS correspondent also stated that they were “now in a position to begin considering the material with a view to making a charging decision”.  (more…)
