Malta, a key entry point into Europe, needs to step up its preparation for migrants and asylum-seekers crossing the Mediterranean Sea and arriving at its external borders, UN human rights expert François Crépeau warned. On the eve of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon addressed the Permanent Council of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The Secretary-General stressed the importance of partnerships between the United Nations and the OSCE in navigating trans-regional crises such as civil conflicts, terrorism, trafficking and political divisions.
