UK government promises GBP 12m to tackle ‘illegal immigration’ from Calais

The UK government has pledged GBP 12m to help France tackle the problem of ‘illegal immigrants’ trying to enter Britain through Calais. The deal, announced on 20 September 2014 by the UK home secretary, Theresa May, and France’s minister of interior, Bernard Cazeneuve, will also see increased cooperation between the two countries’ law enforcement agencies. Pentagon: US and partners begin airstrikes in Syria

The United States and five Arab countries launched airstrikes on 22 September on Islamic State group targets in Syria. The airstrikes were conducted by the US, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates. (more…)

High Commissioner for Human Rights: Greek, Maltese and Italian authorities must share information with Egypt concerning smugglers who allegedly killed hundreds of people

High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein urged Egypt and other North African and European states to help bring to justice the people smugglers who allegedly deliberately sank a boat causing the deaths of hundreds of refugees and migrants in the ‘truly horrendous incident’ which may amount to ‘mass murder’ on 10 September 2014 in the Mediterranean. Security Council urges international support for Iraq’s combat against militants

The Security Council adopted a statement which urged the international community to work closely with the government of Iraq to identify how best the world can aid implementation of the new Iraqi (political) agenda. It once again expressed its deep outrage about Iraqis who have been killed, kidnapped, raped, or tortured by ISIL, and also reaffirmed its full support for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq in assisting the Iraqis and their government in strengthening democratic institutions. Obama says world has ‘responsibility to act, to step up and do more’ in response to Ebola

President Obama urged world powers to accelerate the global response to the Ebola outbreak that is ravaging West Africa, warning that unless health care workers, medical equipment and treatment centers were swiftly deployed, the disease could take hundreds of thousands of lives. Mr. Obama said at a meeting with doctors who had just returned from West Africa that the world ‘has the responsibility to act, to step up and to do more. The United States intends to do more.’ He announced a major American deployment to Liberia and Senegal of medicine, equipment and 3,000 military personnel. (more…)
