James C. Hathaway
James C. Hathaway is the James E. and Sarah A. Degan Professor of Law at University of Michigan Law School, as well as Distinguished Visiting Professor of International Refugee Law at the University of Amsterdam and Professorial Fellow of the University of Melbourne.
He is the Founding Director of the University of Michigan’s Program in Refugee Law and Asylum Law. Hathaway has served as Associate Dean of the Osgoode Hall Law School (Canada) and established Australia’s first all-graduate law program while being Dean of the Melbourne Law School. He regularly provides training on refugee law to academic, governmenatal and non-governmental audiences around the world.
Publications relevant to SHARES include: Reconceiving International Refugee Law (Nijhoff, 1997) and The Rights of Refugees under International Law (CUP, 2005), as well as journal articles as “A Reconsideration of the Underlying Premise of Refugee Law” (Harvard International Law Journal, 1990), “Making International Refugee Law Relevant Again: A Proposal for Collectivized and Solution-Oriented Protection” (Harvard Human Rights Journal, 1997) and “Why Refugee Law Still Matters” (Melbourne Journal of International Law, 2007).
