Columbian government and FARC guerrillas assume responsibility for war victims

During peace negotiations on 7 June, the Columbian government and guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) both agreed to assume responsibility for war victims. During the conflict between the Colombian state and FARC, which started in 1964, more than 200,000 people were killed and many people were wounded and displaced.

The next round of peace talks will concern the issue how to honour and compensate the victims of the war. Points for the debate were set out by peace negotiators, including allocation of reparation for victims and guarantees that they would not have to endure the same suffering again. Both parties promised to accept responsibility for the victims and agreed to clarify the truth of what happened during the conflict and to seek reconciliation.
