Russia calls for probe into alleged Libyan weapons deliveries to Syria

The Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin appealed on Tuesday to the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee to look into possible weapons deliveries from Libya to the Syrian opposition forces, the Voice of Russia reported Wednesday.

The Ambassador was reported expressing hopes that corresponding letters be sent to countries that are referred to as sources of supply of Libyan weapons, in violation of the existing arms embargo. The Russian demand for a probe comes after the New York Times reported in June on an extensive unregistered multinational arms transport network supplying the Syrian opposition with Libyan stockpile weapons through Turkey and Qatar.
