Chad and Niger have intensified the joint military campaign against Boko Haram. Forces from the two states opened a new front in the fight against the Nigerian-based Islamic extremist group amidst growing fears that the conflict, which has been largely restricted to northeast Nigeria and neighbouring borders, could become internationalised. Amid a proliferation of well-funded and well-organised transnational criminal activities in Africa, the Middle East and beyond, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution spotlighting its concern over the ties between cross-border crime and terrorism and called on UN member states to ramp up efforts in combatting the two activities. On Tuesday 20 January 2015, the fifth SHARES Debate is organised in cooperation with SPUI25, an academic-cultural centre that offers a forum for among others lectures, debates and book presentations.

At the UN General Assembly, the President of Ghana noted that just as Ebola was able to freely pass through West African borders, so could drugs, arms, human traffickers and terrorists, and called for greater cooperation and coordination to conquer common threats.
