Special Rapporteur on the protection and promotion of human rights while countering terrorism: ‘The Security Council has an obligation to act’ to protect civilians from ISIL

‘The Security Council has an obligation to act’, Ben Emmerson, the Special Rapporteur on the protection and promotion of human rights while countering terrorism, said in a press release on the presentation of his latest report on the gross violations committed by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant group (ISIL) and the pressing need for accountability. ‘Given the reports of genocide, all members of the Security Council may now have a specific responsibility to take action to prevent this most serious of international crimes’, Mr. Emmerson said. Antiquities ministry reiterates calls for international community to intervene after reports of new attack on ancient city of Dur Sharrukin

‘We have warned previously and warn now that these gangs with their sick, takfiri ideology will continue to destroy and steal artefacts as long as there is no strong deterrent, and we still await a strong international stand to stop the crimes of Daesh that are targeting the memory of humanity,’ the Iraqi antiquities ministry stated, referring to the militant group by its Arabic acronym. UNSC: common effort amongst governments and institutions needed to counter ISIL

The UN Security Council has strongly condemned the ‘ongoing barbaric terrorist acts’ committed by militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and reaffirmed its determination in defeating the extremist group. (more…)

UNSC: ISIL must be defeated by common effort amongst governments and institutions

The UN Security Council strongly condemned the kidnapping and murder by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists of ‘scores’ of Sunni tribesmen whose bodies were found in mass graves in Anbar province, and once again urged the world to unite in a ‘common effort’ to defeat the group and ‘stamp out’ the violence and hatred it espouses. UN relief official: massive scale-up of assistance needed for countries impacted by ongoing Syria crisis

Saying the ongoing civil war in Syria and its spillover effects continue to inflict a devastating human and humanitarian toll on neighbouring countries, John Ging, Operations Director for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, made a strong plea on behalf of the neighbouring countries Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq, as well as Turkey.
