Draft treaty on transboundary collaboration between Rwanda, DRC and Uganda nearing completion

Experts from Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda convened in Kigali to discuss the Treaty of Transboundary Collaboration in the Greater Virunga Landscape. The consultation focused on harmonising comments on the text of the Treaty, taking into account sovereignty concerns of the states on whose territories the protected areas are located. The Treaty seeks to establish a permanent framework for cross-border cooperation to enhance conservation of the biodiversity and improve livelihood of communities in the Greater Virunga Landscape. UN Mission chief applauds joint FARDC-MONUSCO operations against armed groups in eastern DRC

A joint operation by UN troops and the Congolese army (FARDC) took control of the main bases used by an armed group actively threatening security and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s long-troubled eastern region. FARDC troops backed by attack helicopters and the Force Intervention Brigade of the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) took control of bases used by the National Liberation Front, known by the French acronym FNL, in an area of restive South Kivu Province. Head of MONUSCO: International actors need to do more to preserve national resources and biodiversity of Garamba National Park

During a visit to the Garamba National Park, top UN official Mr. Martin Kobler, who heads the UN Organisation Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO), urged national and international actors to step up efforts in preserving the natural resources and rich biodiversity of the park located in the north-eastern part of the country. Governments and corporations pledge at UN summit to eliminate deforestation by 2030

British aid money possibly funds rape and torture in DR Congo

A report from the charity Freedom From Torture (FFT) has raised concern that British aid money may be funding police who are employing rape as a means of state-sanctioned torture against women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). The report found that the Congolese police and security staff are systematically raping the female opponents of President Joseph Kabila, after they were imprisoned in state detention facilities. The report is based on medical evidence from 34 female political activists who fled from DRC to the UK. The findings have raised concerns about the British government’s programme to give over GBP 60m to the DRC’s national police and ‘internal security sector’ to enhance its performance and accountability.
