UNSC: ISIL must be defeated by common effort amongst governments and institutions

The UN Security Council strongly condemned the kidnapping and murder by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists of ‘scores’ of Sunni tribesmen whose bodies were found in mass graves in Anbar province, and once again urged the world to unite in a ‘common effort’ to defeat the group and ‘stamp out’ the violence and hatred it espouses. Security Council approved sanctions against militants in Iraq and Syria

Expressing its ‘gravest concern’ that parts of Iraq and Syria are now under the control of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front, the UN Security Council placed six individuals affiliated with the terrorist groups on its Al-Qaida sanctions list and threatened measures against those who finance, recruit or supply weapons to them. ‘Flagrant’ violations of international law continue in Syria; all parties urged to uphold their obligations under humanitarian law
