In the fight against ISIS, Shiite militias and US forces find themselves on the same side but will not work together

Identified in 2008 by American officials as the biggest threat to US forces, Asaib Ahl al-Haq and the US military are now fighting on the same side, though each insists that they will not work together, The New York Times reports. According to the same source, Asaib Ahl ah-Haq or The League of the Righteous, considered to be the most formidable of Iraq’s three large Iranian-backed militias, is now spearheading the fight against the Sunny extremists of the Islamic State. Arab League pledges to cooperate with all international and regional efforts in the fight against ISIS

On 7 September, during an emergency meeting in Cairo, Foreign Ministers of the Arab League vowed to take all necessary measures to combat the Islamic State group while agreeing to cooperate with all international and regional efforts. (more…)

Ten NATO states form coalition to fight the Islamic State

On 5 September, at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Wales, President Obama announced that nine NATO allies have agreed to join the US in order to form a coalition to fight the Islamic State. (more…)

Security Council approved sanctions against militants in Iraq and Syria

Expressing its ‘gravest concern’ that parts of Iraq and Syria are now under the control of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and Al-Nusra Front, the UN Security Council placed six individuals affiliated with the terrorist groups on its Al-Qaida sanctions list and threatened measures against those who finance, recruit or supply weapons to them. UN declares Iraq ‘Level 3 Emergency’, states urged to do more to help Iraqi civilians

The UN has designated its highest level emergency for the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, citing the scale and complexity of the situation, which is impacting tens of thousands of people that have been forcefully displaced by the armed group, Islamic State (IS). The ‘Level 3 Emergency’ designation will ‘facilitate mobilization of additional resources in goods, funds and assets to ensure a more effective response to the humanitarian needs of populations affected by forced displacements’. UN officials are particularly concerned about the situation on Sinjar Mountain, where are at least several thousand people remain trapped and the health conditions are quickly deteriorating. (more…)
