It is the international community’s duty to draw lessons from the horrific violence and atrocious crimes facing minorities around the world to prevent them from being repeated, UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said at a forum on minority issues.

The Security Council adopted a statement which urged the international community to work closely with the government of Iraq to identify how best the world can aid implementation of the new Iraqi (political) agenda. It once again expressed its deep outrage about Iraqis who have been killed, kidnapped, raped, or tortured by ISIL, and also reaffirmed its full support for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq in assisting the Iraqis and their government in strengthening democratic institutions. The UN has designated its highest level emergency for the humanitarian crisis in Iraq, citing the scale and complexity of the situation, which is impacting tens of thousands of people that have been forcefully displaced by the armed group, Islamic State (IS). The ‘Level 3 Emergency’ designation will ‘facilitate mobilization of additional resources in goods, funds and assets to ensure a more effective response to the humanitarian needs of populations affected by forced displacements’. UN officials are particularly concerned about the situation on Sinjar Mountain, where are at least several thousand people remain trapped and the health conditions are quickly deteriorating. (more…)
