The Security Council adopted a statement which urged the international community to work closely with the government of Iraq to identify how best the world can aid implementation of the new Iraqi (political) agenda. It once again expressed its deep outrage about Iraqis who have been killed, kidnapped, raped, or tortured by ISIL, and also reaffirmed its full support for the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq in assisting the Iraqis and their government in strengthening democratic institutions. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon vowed to mobilise the UN in every possible way to respond to the Ebola outbreak in West Africa and issued an ‘international rescue call’ for a massive surge in assistance, warning that ‘the world can no longer afford to short-change global public health’. (more…)

The number of people killed in Syria is double the number documented a year ago, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay announced, criticising the international community for its failure to stop the ‘killers, destroyers and torturers’ that have torn the country apart. (more…)

The UN expects over 300 initiatives to be announced at the Third UN Conference on Small Island Developing States aimed at fostering partnerships with small island developing states, which will take place from 1 to 4 September 2014. The Conference’s Secretary-General, Wu Hongbo, said that with much of the political work already agreed on, participants can focus on how to take these decisions forward and on generating sustainable partnerships.
