UN proclaims World Wildlife Day, cooperation vital to combating wildlife crime

Illegal wildlife trade undermines rule of law, degrades ecosystems and severely hampers the efforts of rural communities striving to sustainably manage their natural resources, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said as the UN marked World Wildlife Day on 3 March 2015. “Getting serious about wildlife crime means enrolling the support of all sections of society involved in the production and consumption of wildlife products, which are widely used as medicines, food, building materials, furniture, cosmetics, clothing and accessories,” the Secretary-General said. “The situation is serious,” he declared, urging the international community to tackle the poaching, transport and consumption of illegally traded wildlife and in so doing use the same sorts of enforcement tools, techniques and penalties used to combat other serious crimes, such as trafficking in drugs or persons. UN High Commissioner for Refugees: share burden of Syrian refugees

UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres said regarding Syrian refugees that found refuge in neighbouring states that it is his ‘duty to ask the international community to realize that this burden is far too heavy to be borne by only the neighbouring countries, and to put in place more – and more robust – measures of sharing this burden.’

He said that ‘more international solidarity with host countries and communities is now a must’, meaning not only ‘assistance through humanitarian organizations. It must also mean emergency development support – structural assistance – to neighbouring States, most importantly in health, education, housing, water, and energy supply.’

Helen Clark, Administrator of the UN Development Programme, added that ‘the challenge now is to ensure that our collective response to this complex crisis is both humanitarian and developmental in approach. The humanitarian needs are very stark, but the developmental challenges exacerbated by the crisis in the sub-region cannot be ignored.’

UNDP and partners launch strategy to fight malaria

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the Roll Back Malaria Partnership (RBM) launched the ‘Multisectoral Action Framework for Malaria’, a comprehensive approach to fight malaria. The Framework calls for increased coordinated action among different development sectors to tackle the disease, which exacts its deadliest toll in sub-Saharan Africa and poses a major challenge to development.

According to UNDP, malaria is costing Africa about 12 billion US dollar in lost productivity every year.
