UN Secretary-General pledges to promote ‘common response’ to central Asia’s diverse challenges

Ban Ki-moon is visiting Central Asia ‘to support and promote a common response to the many cross-border challenges the region faces, including environmental issues, water and energy, drug trafficking and trans-boundary crime’. He will visit five countries (Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan), and will emphasise the importance of cooperation and will also touch on key UN priorities, such as ensuring sustainable development and tackling climate change during his visit. United Nations General Assembly calls for shared responsibility and global cooperation to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030

The latest report of the United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, entitled ‘Future of the AIDS response: building on past achievements and accelerating progress to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030’ was welcomed by member states at the sixty-ninth session of the General Assembly. (more…)

UN Secretary-General: Europa has collective responsibility to act to address challenge of migration

The UN Secretary-General emphasised the importance of addressing the challenge of migration, in the Mediterranean and in Southeast Asia, in his speech to the European Parliament in Brussels. Around 1,800 had drowned in the Mediterranean this year already, which was a 20-fold increase on 2014. He stressed that ‘Europe has an important role to play and a collective responsibility to act.’ ‘Saving lives should be the top priority’, he said, adding ‘[a]nd while we need to see more effective law enforcement actions against traffickers and smugglers, we also need safer alternatives to dangerous voyages, as well as legal channels such as resettlement, family reunification and work and study visas.’ (more…)

Ban Ki-moon’s latest report urges UN Security Council to authorise delivery of aid without Syrian consent

On 22 May, in a confidential report, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the Security Council to authorise the delivery of food and medicine to Syria without Al-Assad’s consent. In what the NY Times has named Ban Ki-moon’s strongest push to date to bypass Syria’s government so as to deliver aid, the Secretary General indicated that the Syrian government is failing in its responsibility to look after its own people.
